Federal Government Urges SSANU/NASU to Call Off Warning Strike Immediately

The Federal Government has started appealing to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) to call off their seven-day warning strike.


The two associations started the industrial action on Monday, March 17th, 2024, as they squeezed for the payment of their salaries and compensations.

Right now, the Minister of State, who is in charge of labor and employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, is approaching the two unions to hold a strike.

The representative of the ministry, Olajide Oshundun, cited her in a statement as communicating dismay over the activity of the associations, which she depicted as an all-out negligence for the Federal Government's deliberate effort to address their concerns.



She expressed that the Ministry was not formally informed by the associations of their aim to embark on a seven-day warning strike, a development the minister said is contrary to the provisions of Section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act.

"However, when the Ministry heard about the planned advance notice strike, it contacted the authority of the associations for an emergency meeting to turn away the strike.

Sadly, a physical meeting couldn't be set up between the associations and the federal government, yet a Tele conversation occurred between their leadership and the Ministry," the assertion read.

"Thus, the Ministry recommended another date, Monday, March 18th, for an official meeting, trusting that based on that conversation, the expected strike would be required to be postponed as a result of the meeting; however, this date was dismissed by the associations.

"The Minister has consistently kept up with that strike, which fills no valuable need and ought to just be depended on as a last resort later depleting each conciliation effort.

"She requests that the SSANU and NASU move away from their firm stance positions and meet the national government at the table for conciliation.
