In 11 locations around the country, 577 blind applicants are scheduled to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2024.
In preparation for the 2024 UTME for blind candidates and other individuals with special needs entrusted to JEOG, Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, the Chairman of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Equal Opportunity Group, disclosed this to reporters on Thursday.The JAMB Equal Opportunity Group was established in 2017 by JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede to facilitate the efficient management of candidates who are blind or have other special requirements.

According to Okebukola, "JAMB will introduce the bimodal system of UTME administration this year and for the first time through JEOG."
Fully-Braille and Fully Read-Aloud are involved in this. The mode that they choose is up to them. JAMB has provided resources to JEOG so that candidates can have a positive experience with both test administration methods.
"There are the most blind candidates in the 2024 UTME, totaling 577. In 2022, we had 348, and in 2023, 313. The main cause of the 2024 increase, according to him, is JEOG's enhanced advocacy, a process that will be strengthened in the upcoming years.
Oloyede, according to Okebukola, the president of the Global University Network for Innovation, is one of the most steadfast advocates for equal access to higher education in Africa.
"Over the past four days, I have met with members of GUNi-Africa regarding the treatment of blind candidates seeking higher education in Africa, and everyone agrees that Nigeria, with Oloyede at the helm, is the best," he stated.

Okebukola announced that "this year, the cost of their UTME registration will be refunded on-site during the examination for all blind candidates who are prima facie qualified for admission to institutions of higher learning in Nigeria (that is, with at least five O-level credits)."
The National Universities Commission's former executive secretary claimed that Oloyede had been giving out five more "goodies" to the candidates since 2017. These included free hotel accommodations for blind candidates and their guides, a free Braille slate and stylus, personalized t-shirts, free meals during the exam period, and transportation assistance for the candidates.

According to Okebukola, Kano has the biggest number of candidates (138), with Prof. Muhammad Bello, a former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, serving as coordinator. Many of the center coordinators are also former vice-chancellors.
"This is why I have nominated Oloyede for the CNN Heroes Award," stated Okebukola. We are rallying all of Africa to back the nomination for 2024, and we won't stop until God grants him the opportunity to receive the honor that he so well deserves.

Additionally, Abuja (60)- Professor Sunday Ododo; Ado-Ekiti (37) - Professor Rasheed Aderinoye, former Executive Secretary, National Commission for Nomadic Education; Bauchi (44) - Professor Salisu Shehu, current Vice-Chancellor of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano; Benin (26) - Professor Samuel G. Odewumi; Enugu (66) - Professor Emeritus Mosto Onuoha (former DVC Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufo-Alike); Kebbi (21) - Professor Asabe Kabir; Oyo (57) - Professor Taoheed Adedoja, VC of IBB University, Prof. Nasiru Maiturare, was a former Minister of Sports and Special Duties; Yola (16) is home to Prof. Muhammad Yakasai, VC of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa.
He mentioned that the exam, which included 20 subjects, was set for April 22 and 23 in the eleven centers.

He clarified that there had been no reduction in standards of any kind and that blind candidates had used the same test papers as ordinary candidates.
In the meantime, during the 2024 UTME exam, JAMB has instructed all proprietors of computer-based test centers to detain any parent who is discovered in the vicinity of any of their locations.

The board stated that the direction was required as a result of certain parents' excessive behavior during earlier board exercises.
Oloyede claims that if a parent disobeys this directive, their ward will not only be detained but also not be allowed to take the exam.
