What is the meaning of NYSC?

The word NYSC is an acronym for the National Youth Service Corporation.

The National Youth Service Corporation is a one-year program that is only meant for graduates. It is paramilitary in nature.

NYSC is accompanied by training and volunteer service. It is expected of all youth who are still within the age requirement to embark on this training immediately after they have successfully reached the end of their academic year.

This program is only limited to graduates of universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and military schools.

The National Youth Service Corporation was inaugurated by General Yakubu Gowon in 1973. The aim behind this is to promote peace, unity, and cohesion within and across different tribes. It also aimed at building the spirit of perseverance and adaptation in the graduates as they began to explore life.

NYSC camp training and orientation also give youth a token of military training to defend and provide protection in real situations, as the condition may be.

Essential document requirements for Orientation camp

  1. Call-up letter
  2. Statement of result
  3. School identity card
  4. Covid testing verification slip (COVID green slip)
  5. Green card
  6. Medical fitness clearance certificate

You need to know the importance of each of these documents, so let's pick and explain one after the other.

  • Call-up letter: Just as the name implies, it means that you have been called to serve as a recent graduate in the country. It is a means of verification proving you are not a fraudster, that you have completed the NYSC registration successfully, and that you are listed for the exact batch.
  • Statement of result: It is a document that specifies that you are truly a graduate of the recognized institution of study. This document cannot be issued if you are yet to be satisfied as a graduate of the institution. The statement of result will indicate your graduating statement and your result throughout your academic year.
  • School identity card: Every institution of study always gives out an ID card to all its students. So, you are expected to present your school ID card. This proves you as an authorized student of the institution.
  • COVID testing verification slip (COVID green slip): You are talking about 2020 COVID-19 and lockdown; this is what led to the COVID green slip. You are expected to Fill out a document while registering before camp; this indicates your compliance to be tested for the virus, whether you previously had the card or not. This test is the first thing you will undertake while getting to the orientation camp.
  • Green card: You will be given a card immediately after your registration. What this card indicates is that you have truly completed all the registration processes required for the program.
  • Medical fitness clearance certificate: The whole purpose of this document is to verify health and medical status or ability. Providing this proof that you are not dangerous to others or yourself also means that you are fit physically to engage in tedious or strenuous activity because the NYSC camp activities are mentally draining.

Units or Segments of NYSC

There are four main units in NYSC. Every youth who is a recent graduate is expected to participate in the program within the assigned year.

  1. The NYSC orientation camp: This three-week camp course is part of a year-long program where the graduates, the teenagers, are expected to live a regulated life in an enclosed environment. The camp officials arrange and determine their entire schedule in advance. As they get ready for the year-long training, they are taught a variety of self-defense and life-saving techniques.
  2. Place of Primary Assignment (PPA): This is where the remaining part of the year's activities should be held. It is the location where the young person (a graduate) is expected to work and carry out the program's overall vision and mission.
  3. Community Development Service (CDS): Recall that the primary goal of the NYSC program is to promote national harmony, peace, and cohesiveness; no state is excluded from this program. As a result, the government promotes development and growth in small areas through the Community Development Service (CDS) program. Given the size and population of the nation, the president and governors are unable to visit or touch every corner of it. As a result, they have sent Corp members—participants in the NYSC program—as delegates to every town and community to aid in the development of the local area to facilitate the development of the nation.
  4. Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Department (SAED): This branch of NYSC assists in preparing and enabling young people to be independent, skilled workers. Although the school promotes white-collar jobs, NYSC is a proponent of privately owned businesses since they think everyone should be skilled in a craft that they can quickly become the owner of.
