The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Other Allied Institutions has threatened to shut down the university system unless their withholding salaries are paid.

These salaries were withheld when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari imposed a 'No Work, No Pay' policy during SSANU and NASU's four-month strike in 2022.

In an interview, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of SSANU and NASU, revealed that in November 2023 and January 2024, the Minister of Education, Prof. Mamman Tahir, pledged to pay the union's unpaid wages.

He further stated that three weeks ago, President Bola Tinubu requested that the union's withholding salary be paid, but they have yet to receive any payments.

According to Tribune Online, President Bola Tinubu has asked the Ministers of Finance, Wale Edun, and Education, Tahir, to look into ways to pay the four months' salaries withheld from SSANU and NASU.

Ibrahim complained that the union called off its demonstration owing to the planned EndBadGovernance rally and the country's instability.

He said that if the problem was not remedied, they might close the universities.

He stated, "We are genuinely astonished that the President issued an order for payment to be paid to SSANU and NASU, and three weeks later, there has been no movement. Members are upset, dissatisfied, and grumbling. We are regularly told that 'work is in process,' but what work?

This is an electronic payment method, and these duties can be performed in 48 hours. The records are already in place, including withheld salaries; everything is in the IT office with the Accountant General.

So what's the holdup? We only postponed our indefinite strike owing to the country's current security crisis, but if this trend continues, we may be forced to fully shut down the system.
