Commonwealth scholarships 2024/2025 launched by FGN (APPLY NOW)

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) for 2024–2025 is currently accepting applications, according to a release from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides funding for the scholarships, intended to assist gifted people from low- and middle-income Commonwealth nations in pursuing higher education in the UK.

Online applications will be accepted from September 10, 2024, until October 15, 2024, for interested candidates.

The Federal Ministry of Education's official X page provides information that prospective applicants can receive application forms and full guidelines by following these procedures:

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Master's Scholarships, applicants must have finished their undergraduate studies with a First Class or Upper Second-Class Honours degree; for PhD scholarships, a Second Class Lower Division degree is necessary.

Before applying, candidates must get at least two admissions from UK universities and a valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.

NIS attested to the fact that applications are free of cost and that candidates must print their filled-out forms before submitting them. They pointed out that a supportive letter from a supervisor from a UK university is necessary for PhD students.

Some of the additional requirement for all eligible applicants are:

  • Be a British Protected Person, a citizen of a Commonwealth country that qualifies, or a person to whom refugee status has been given.
  • Possess a permanent residence in a Commonwealth nation that qualifies.
  • Be prepared to begin academic studies in the UK by September 2024, when the UK academic year officially begins.
  • By September 2024, you must have earned a first degree with at least an upper second-class (2:1) honors standard, or a lower second-class degree with a suitable postgraduate degree (often a Master's degree). A second master's degree would often not be covered by the CSC. A justification for choosing to pursue this particular course of study must be included in the application for a second Master's degree.
  • Not have the money to study in the UK if this scholarship wasn't awarded.
  • Have the required supporting documentation in the format that has been asked for.

Commonwealth stated on its platform that before applying, interested parties should confirm that they are citizens of the nations mentioned. 

Addressing supporting document

The team further stated that in addition to some supporting documents, applicants need to provide proof of citizenship or refugee status, complete academic transcripts, and at least two references.

By the deadline, these documents must be uploaded in PDF format to the online application system.

Documentation submitted after the closing date or outside of the online system will not be accepted by the CSC. the mentioned organization.

They went on to say that references and supporting documents are needed to meet certain requirements on the applicant's qualifications and possible impact. They also needed to be sent by email from a verified source or on institutional letterhead.

Selection Criteria 

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) evaluates applications based on academic merit, the quality of the research proposal, and the potential impact on the candidate’s home country. 

The CSC looks for people who are motivated to use their education to advance their home countries and who show they have what it takes to make a significant contribution to global development.
