Nelfund boss Akintunde Sawyerr

Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), reiterated that NELFUND has started receiving applications for the 2024/2025 academic session.

To avoid delay in the processing of your application, you are advised to apply as early as possible, Sawyerr stated.

He encouraged students at higher education institutions across the country to apply for more loans, assuring them that the process is transparent and free of interference.

Sawyerr, speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, emphasized that NELFUND is doing everything possible to guarantee that loans are granted and disbursed fairly to students who apply for them.

According to him, a total of N23 billion has been given to students at 228 universities, including N18 billion for tuition and N5 billion for maintenance. The NELFUND president said that 326,000 people have already applied for the loan and that the federal government is fully prepared to pay the plan.

Sawyerr added that the registration was made available online to guarantee that the loans were open to anyone, with the goal of eliminating bias.

"You don't have to know anybody to get the loan," he told me.

The NELFUND reiterated that the loan was interest-free and emphasized that the government was committed to ensuring that no one was denied the opportunity to learn due to a lack of funding.

Sawyerr commented on the information that the loan was being utilized by more students in the North than any other portion of the country.

NELFUND has strengthened its awareness-raising efforts so that everyone may recognize the potential it offers.

Sawyerr stated, "What we are doing is ensuring that everyone is aware of the opportunities and facts surrounding it (the loan) so that they can make informed decisions about what to do." If they opt not to take the loan, there is nothing we can do.

He stated that the data revealed that some Nigerians in certain sections of the country were hesitant to take the loan due to skepticism and cultural differences.

According to him, seeking a loan is not common practice in some sections of the country, which explains the initial hesitation.

He stated that things had already begun to change in recent years, given the increased level of awareness.

The NELFUND CEO stated that the areas of the country that were not believed to be asking for for the loan have begun to pick up and do well.

He told them that NELFUND would continue to raise awareness so that Nigerians may continue to profit from the opportunities that exist.

He added, "Our responsibility is to go to every nook and crannyny of Nigeria and make Nigerians aware of the availability and chances to encourage them to take the loan if they require it.

"Northerners took the loan faster than their southern counterparts..."

"But we feel that, given the actions put in place, the formerly skeptical areas are now expanding quicker (in terms of application) than the rest of the country.

"Our obligation is to create equitable opportunity. Our goal is to ensure that all Nigerians receive fair and equitable information about what is going on."
