The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has raised alarms regarding the escalating instances of corps members being turned away by their designated employers.
Brig.-Gen Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of the NYSC, highlighted the matter on Wednesday in Jos at the 2025 Annual NYSC Corps Employers’ Workshop.
Speaking on his behalf, Mrs. Gbamisola Salami, the NYSC Deputy Director for the North-Central Zone, conveyed that corps employers play a vital role in influencing the overall experience of corps members during their service year.

“Your organizations offer a platform for corps members to utilize their skills, acquire practical knowledge, and enhance their professional capabilities,” he stated.
However, Nafiu expressed regret that the increasing frequency of employers declining corps members often hinders them from obtaining valuable experience in those workplaces.
He also pointed out that during the NYSC’s quarterly inspection visits, several other issues regarding corps employers were noted.
These issues include procrastination or complete neglect in applying for corps members, failure to provide necessary welfare provisions, and, in some instances, mistreatment of corps members.

The Director-General urged corps employers to be aware of the numerous difficulties faced by corps members and to cultivate a supportive work atmosphere “that fosters their welfare and productivity.”
Nafiu stressed that a cooperative relationship between the NYSC and corps employers is crucial for reinforcing the objectives of the scheme.
“By collaborating, we can ensure that the NYSC programme continues to be relevant, effective, and impactful in molding the future leaders of Nigeria,” he remarked.
He expressed gratitude to all corps employers who have collaborated with the NYSC, stating, “Your support and dedication to the NYSC programme are invaluable, and we anticipate a stronger partnership moving forward.”
Earlier, Mr. Jonathan Yavala, the NYSC Coordinator in Plateau, indicated that the workshop aimed to nurture a friendly and productive relationship between corps members and the NYSC.

Yavala stressed the workshop’s significance in bridging communication divides and ensuring the seamless deployment and engagement of corps members throughout the state.
He mentioned that the workshop’s theme, “Partners in Progress: Corps Employers’ Role in Enhancing Corps Members’ Well-being and Productivity,” was both pertinent and opportune, as “the scheme seeks innovative approaches to deepen its contribution to nation-building.”
According to him, the success of the NYSC scheme relies not only on the groundwork established during the orientation stage but also on the partnerships formed in the field, particularly with corps employers.
“You are not just workplace supervisors: you are mentors, guides, and collaborators in shaping the future of these young Nigerians,” he asserted.
He encouraged employers to foster a supportive work environment for corps members, driven by empathy, purpose, and professionalism, which would significantly benefit the well-being and ultimately the productivity of the corps members.

In his statements, Mr. Musa Ashoms, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Plateau and Chairman of the NYSC state Governing Board, praised the NYSC for hosting the workshop.
As he declared the workshop open, Ashoms indicated that the event was intended to engage all relevant parties, ensuring that corps members receive exposure to the work environment while also being provided with a supportive atmosphere to make meaningful contributions to their host communities and the country as a whole.
