The Lagos State Government has relaunched its “Cash for Trash” recycling programme, encouraging residents to exchange recyclable waste for cash as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and a cleaner city.
The initiative, which falls under the state’s waste-to-wealth agenda, is jointly managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
Through the programme, residents can visit designated collection points every Thursday to submit recyclable items such as plastic bottles, cans, and cartons in exchange for cash rewards.
Announcing the development in a statement shared on X, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the scheme aims to reward Lagosians who take part in recycling and proper waste management.

A video released alongside the statement showed LAWMA officials weighing sorted plastic waste and paying participants immediately after submission.
Wahab noted that the Cash for Trash scheme supports Lagos State’s broader goal of reducing pollution, combating climate change, and promoting responsible waste disposal.
The government reiterated its commitment to creating a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Lagos through active citizen participation.
“Get involved and see the value in your waste,” Wahab added.
