The NYSC Enugu State Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwakemi Awolola, delivered a powerful, purpose-driven address to 2025 Batch B Stream I corp members during a formal orientation camp briefing held at the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Udi, Enugu State. The event, which commenced at 4:16 PM, opened with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) anthem and the national prayer, creating an atmosphere of solemnity, unity, and patriotic spirit.
The session began with the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), Warrant Officer Ponfa Z., urging the Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) to maintain silence and ensure the hall was calm and conducive for the important session.
The Camp Public Relations Officer (PRO) then welcomed the State Coordinator and principal officials into the hall. In her introduction, the PRO presented the profile of Mrs. Awolola, highlighting her academic background and rich history within the NYSC system.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Camp Director Mrs. Ngozi Achuama, the Head of the Clinic, the Head of Registration, and other key camp officials. The PRO also formally introduced the platoon officers who would be working directly with the corps members during the orientation exercise. These included Maduke Cordial, Linda Amech, Ani Lucy, Chime Gloria, Eze Juliet, Uzor Ifedima, Azi Linda, and Dozie, among others.

In her remarks, Mrs. Awolola congratulated the corps members on the successful completion of their academic journeys and expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for their lives. She also encouraged them to appreciate their parents and sponsors for their support. She emphasised that the orientation camp is vastly different from the freedom they enjoyed on campus, highlighting that the NYSC program is highly regimented and structured for the purpose of national growth and youth transformation.
“Discipline is the watchword,” she firmly declared, reminding corps members that they are expected to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the NYSC scheme as outlined in their guidebooks. She warned that flouting camp rules, engaging in cultism, drug abuse, or immoral conduct will attract disciplinary action and possible handover to law enforcement agencies.
The State Coordinator went further to explain the significance of the NYSC scheme, referencing its establishment under the administration of General Yakubu Gowon after the Nigerian Civil War. The scheme’s core objectives, she said, are centered on reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation (the 3Rs), with a primary goal of fostering national unity and integration.
Highlighting the four cardinal programs of NYSC Orientation Course, Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), Community Development Service (CDS), and Passing Out, Mrs. Awolola explained the vital role each phase plays in the life of a corps member. She encouraged PCMs to engage fully in the orientation course, which includes drills, meditation, and leadership mentorship designed to mold them into responsible and courageous leaders.
Regarding the issue of relocation, the Coordinator clarified that requests would only be considered on the grounds of marriage (for female corps members) and certified medical conditions.
Touching on health and welfare, Mrs. Awolola advised corps members against self-medication and encouraged them to take advantage of the camp clinic and services under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). She also reassured them about the hygienic conditions under which camp meals are prepared.
On the topic of youth empowerment, the Coordinator spoke extensively on the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, an initiative introduced in 2012 to combat unemployment and promote self-reliance. She urged corps members to seize the opportunity to learn a skill while in camp, describing it as a gateway to a prosperous and sustainable future.
She also advised corps members to care for camp facilities and maintain a clean environment, reiterating that the facilities are temporary and must be preserved for future use.
The session concluded with a brief interactive segment where corps members asked questions regarding project funding, kit distribution delays, and accommodation challenges. Responding, Mrs. Awolola explained that project ideas raised by corps members would be supported through appropriate channels. She assured them that everyone would receive their kits before the swearing-in ceremony and confirmed that bunk beds were available and were still being assembled to accommodate all.
