The Federal Government has reaffirmed its resolve to protect the credibility of Nigeria’s education system by strengthening academic record-keeping and enforcing stricter institutional compliance nationwide. This is the latest NYSC update.
The move is part of broader reforms aimed at restoring trust in academic qualifications and preventing certificate fraud.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, made this known during a national capacity-building programme organised to support the rollout of the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD). The event, themed “Strengthening Institutional Compliance and Academic Records Integrity,” brought together school representatives to reinforce standards for accurate, secure, and verifiable academic documentation across tertiary institutions.
According to the minister, reliable data is central to effective governance and policy planning. He described NERD as a strategic digital infrastructure designed to standardise and authenticate academic records nationwide.

The platform will issue national credential numbers, operate a credential revocation system, host a student clearinghouse, and maintain a central database for theses, academic publications, and institutional records.
Within four months of enforcement, nearly 100,000 student records have been digitally preserved, while more than 250 tertiary institutions have been integrated into the system for real-time verification. Over 133,000 students and 6,800 lecturers are currently enrolled, supported by hundreds of designated focal officers. In addition, over 1,000 digital service centres have been established in partnership with local entrepreneurs, generating thousands of jobs.
Dr. Alausa also disclosed that the government acted decisively following reports that some Nigerians obtained questionable degrees from unaccredited foreign institutions. He said investigations were carried out on presidential directive, resulting in the dismissal of individuals found to have presented fraudulent certificates within the public service. He stressed that an academic certificate represents a national guarantee of due process and standards, and that weak record systems undermine that guarantee.
To promote excellence, the ministry has approved the establishment of an annual NERD National Laureate Prize to reward outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate research, with prizes ranging from ₦5 million to ₦20 million. The minister further directed institutions and regulatory agencies, including TETFund and the National Universities Commission, to ensure full compliance with the new framework, noting that participation in national programmes such as NYSC will now require adherence to NERD standards.

NERD Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Tunji Ariyomo, described the initiative as a critical step toward preserving Nigeria’s academic heritage and preventing the loss of valuable research. He noted that poor documentation practices have historically weakened knowledge continuity in the country. Both officials emphasised that the reform is anchored on transparency, accountability, and the use of locally developed technology, positioning Nigeria to compete more effectively in the global knowledge economy.
