OpenAI has launched its AI and Mental Health Grant Program to fund research projects exploring how artificial intelligence intersects with mental health and emotional well-being. As AI systems become more advanced and widely used, OpenAI recognises that people are increasingly relying on these tools in deeply personal and sensitive contexts.
The organisation noted that it has been actively improving how its AI models detect and respond to signs of emotional or psychological distress.
By collaborating with mental health professionals and safety experts, OpenAI has refined its models to handle sensitive conversations more responsibly and has published updates showing how these improvements perform in real-world use.
Despite this progress, the company acknowledged that AI and mental health remains a developing research area across the wider technology industry.
To expand knowledge beyond its internal work, OpenAI is inviting independent researchers to submit proposals as part of a broader investment in AI safety.
The grant programme is intended to encourage fresh perspectives, advance understanding, and drive innovation that benefits both OpenAI’s safety efforts and the global research community.
