If President Bola Tinubu approves the payment of their salary arrears, non-academic staff members at universities would receive half of their withheld salaries, according to the Federal Government.
According to Education Minister Tahir Mamman, who made this claim on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday, academic colleagues were not on strike for the same length of time in 2022 as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
Members of SSANU and NASU went on a one-week warning strike in March in protest of the federal government withholding their pay.
The Federal Government was chastised by the two unions for failing to pay the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) its withheld payments while ignoring the non-academic unions.

Following the invocation of a “No Work, No Pay policy” against the unions by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu authorized the payment of four of the eight months’ worth of salary that had been withheld in October of last year.

By not paying them equally to their academic counterparts, SSANU and NASU claimed that the Federal Government was discriminating against them and treating them unfairly.
The administration has been “doing everything possible to get relief for them,” according to the minister of education.
The minister responded, “No, it has not been approved,” when asked what was causing the payment to SSANU and NASU members to be delayed.
When asked to estimate when the non-academic varsity staff members will be paid, Mamman responded, “I don’t think it’s safe to estimate when it will happen, but it’s safer to say that we are working on it.”
In any event, the non-academic workers did not go on strike for the whole four months that the academic staff did.
Therefore, if the President follows his precedence with the academic staff, the payment they receive will be half of that amount.
The minister remarked, “That cannot be right; there is no rating,” in response to the NASU and SSANU claims of discrimination.
While working in the same settings, these individuals are performing distinct tasks but all aiming for the same end result.
