It was formerly a college of the University of London, it was founded in 1948 as University College Ibadan, adhering to the British educational paradigm.

Following Nigeria’s independence in 1962, UI became an autonomous institution, building on its great academic history.

The university’s transformation from a University of London college to an independent establishment is indicative of its important historical significance in Nigeria.

Under the direction of Kenneth Mellanby, the university’s first principal, classes at UI started in January 1948 on a campus with tropical modernist architecture.

Nigeria’s first prime minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, was appointed the university’s first chancellor in 1963, signifying its ties to the country’s political leadership. Kenneth Dike, the first vice chancellor from Nigeria, further solidified the institution’s reputation, whose name is still attached to the university library today.

UI’s dedication to intellectual rigor and honesty is summed up in its motto, “Recte Sapere Fons” (To think clearly is the fount of knowledge).

The current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, and the Chancellor, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar uphold this mission.

Nigeria has benefited greatly from the University of Ibadan’s contributions to its political, industrial, economic, and cultural environment through its vast network of graduates.

For Nigeria and the broader African continent, the school plays a crucial role in fostering knowledge and leadership.

UI continues to put student welfare first, with twelve Halls of Residence housing around 30% of its student population, and three more are currently under construction with funding from the FG Revitalization Funds.

The goal of the university is to become a premier academic institution that satisfies societal demands.

Its goals are to advance knowledge through top-notch research and learning environments, produce graduates with moral character and sound judgment, use creativity and innovation to transform society and act as a dynamic steward of society’s uplifting ideals while upholding its integrity.
