The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced significant modifications to the departmental subjects and classifications for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the new directive, secondary school students, parents, and school administrators are to note that the existing departmental structure has been reorganized to reflect modern educational standards and better align with students’ academic and career development.
Under the new arrangement, the Art Department will now be known as Humanities, while the former Social Science Department, previously referred to as Commercial, has been renamed Business. The Science Department, however, retains its original name.
WAEC stated that candidates are now expected to register under one of three main programmes, namely Sciences, Humanities, or Business.

Each candidate must select six elective subjects along with three compulsory subjects.
In the Sciences category, available subjects include Geography, Further Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Health Education, Physical Education, Physics, Livestock Farming, Technical Drawing, Computer Hardware and GSM Repair, Foods and Nutrition, as well as Beauty and Cosmetology.
For the Humanities category, candidates may choose from Christian Religious Studies, Government, Nigerian History, Islamic Studies, Literature in English, Arabic, Hausa Language, Igbo Language, Yoruba Language, Edo, Efik, Ibibio, and Livestock Farming.
Meanwhile, the Business category offers subjects such as Commerce, Accounting, Marketing, Economics, Livestock Farming, Computer Hardware and GSM Repairs, Beauty and Cosmetology, and Fashion Design and Garment Making.
WAEC further disclosed that all students sitting for the WASSCE must offer three compulsory subjects, namely Citizenship and Heritage Studies (formerly Civic Education), English Language, and General Mathematics.
The examination body urged all concerned schools, parents, guardians, and students to take note of these changes and ensure proper subject selection during registration.
It emphasized that the updated structure was introduced to promote clarity, balance, and flexibility within the Nigerian secondary education system, while also ensuring that candidates are better equipped for future academic and professional pursuits.
