This is a New Year message made available to journalists in Ibadan by the Chairman University of Ibadan chapter of the union, Professor Ayo Akinwole.
The pending issues included the withheld 3½ months’ salaries and the third-party deductions owed the union members, the ASUU chairman listed.
Our members’ withheld 3½ month salary and third-party deductions are expected to be paid promptly. We also expect Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to be released, as well as financing for university revitalization in accordance with the FGN-ASUU MoUs of 2012, 2013, and 2017,” he added.

Professor Akinwole continued: “In the absence of visible and concrete efforts at addressing the pending issues and meeting our expectations, there is likely to be a long-drawn confrontation between our union and the federal government, which will probably lead to another round of untold avoidable crisis in the university system in Nigeria.”

The ASUU chairman expressed concern over the planned abolition of TETFUND under the tax administration bill, stating that this will end the little infrastructure funding that TETFUND has been providing since 2030. “This misguided policy will have far-reaching and negative consequences for Nigeria’s university system.”
This is undoubtedly an attempt to eliminate the primary source of infrastructure funding for already struggling public tertiary institutions.” Professor Akinwole went on to say, “There is also an attempt to commodify university education in Nigeria.” Part of the tax administration law proposes abolishing the education tax and replacing it with a “development levy.”
