Oyo state government embarks fresh selection process for Alaafin of oyo

A new process for selecting the new Alaafin of Oyo has begun, as been a dilemma in determining the next supreme ruler.

According to the PUNCH newspaper, the old town’s kingmakers have engaged in a court dispute over the nomination of the new ruler.

Kingmakers in Oyo town, popularly known as the Oyomesi in Council, has filed a petition marked HOY/38/2023 before the Oyo State High Court, ought to prohibit Governor Seyi Makinde from rejecting Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin, whom they said they unanimously chose at a September 30, 2023 meeting. 

The lawsuit has resulted in a standoff between the kingmakers and the governor.

Our correspondent’s investigations found that the state government had initiated a new selection process to ensure that the proper person was chosen as the next monarch.

According to unconfirmed rumors, the government planned to announce the next Alaafin shortly after several Oyo Mesi (kingmakers) paid a visit to Governor Seyi Makinde a few days ago.

When called, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, stated, “The governor is not present. He has travelled, and no one can declare the next Alaafin.

“The new selection process will begin shortly.”

A conversant government source, who did not want her name printed, stated, “The fresh selection process will begin soon. The governor’s goal is to guarantee that the proper person emerges.

Another credible source stated, “We are doing everything necessary to avoid a problem in the appointment of the next Alaafin.

I would like to inform you that the administration will reveal the next Alaafin very shortly. But it will require due process.”

When approached, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, simply stated, “I’m not aware of it.”
