The University of Benin’s student union government has been placed on indefinite leave by the school’s administration in Edo State.

The university’s registrar, Ademola Bobola, revealed the union’s decision in a letter to the student body that was made accessible to the media on Tuesday in Benin City.

“Among many other reasons, your education diverse the best of attention. He said.

The letter said, “The vice-chancellor has accepted the suspension of the university’s students union after giving the management’s report full attention.

The indefinite suspension is effective immediately, that is, on Monday, April 29, 2024.

As a result, by no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, all officers of the students’ union are required to turn over to the Dean of Students’ Affairs any union property that they may have.

“In the interim, it has been approved that a caretaker committee made up of members from universities, schools, and institutions will oversee students’ activities while they are suspended.

This is to bring the vice chancellor’s directive to the attention of the university community and ensure that the former union officers comply as necessary.

The April 12 event at the university’s Senior Staff Club was the reason for the suspension.

On that day, the union allegedly interrupted a conversation between university employees and the Labour Party candidate for governor of Edo State, Olumide Akpata.

It was said that the students misbehaved throughout the entire event, physically abusing many staff members, including one member of the Universities Academic Staff who was allegedly beaten to a pulp.

The university’s administration formed a panel of inquiry to look into the incident and determine the main cause of the problem after it happened.
