The truth is, some people or organizations can take advantage of corp members just to benefit their interests. And you don’t want to be treated like a servant or overworked, all in the name of serving your fatherland.
Let me give you an idea of what being a new corp members is like. It’s very common for newcomers to be super eager to get to their PPA, settle in quickly, and be “accepted” so they can head back home as soon as possible.
It’s completely normal to feel like that; in fact, almost every corps member goes through it.
Guess what? You’re not alone.
Probably, you might want to show off your new khakis to your family or just have a chance to strut down the street a bit. It’s okay to feel the same way too, just like everyone else.
But here’s an important thing you need to note: most PPAs are great and have very welcoming staff. You’re not the first corps member to be posted there. Therefore, relax, stay open-minded, and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself if needed.

1. Be anxious for nothing
Take your time when looking for a PPA. There’s no rush! You have enough time to find a place that suits you. Yes, you heard me well.
Trust me, it’s worth being patient.
Don’t accept any PPA out of desperation, especially one where you’ll be hawking or doing work that doesn’t match your worth. You’re better than that!
Also, don’t settle for any old primary school just because you’re tired of searching. Some corps members end up feeling like babysitters, cleaning up after kindergarten pupils.
Why? This is simply because they didn’t wait for a better opportunity. The key takeaway is to stay patient and know your worth.
2. You need a good accommodation
Let’s be honest, many PPAs don’t have great accommodation for corp members.
It might be that the spaces are too cramped or not conducive at all. Most times, you might have to sort out accommodation for yourself, and that’s okay.

3. Your free day (CDS day)
Do you know that each week, you’re entitled to a free day when you’re NOT expected to be at your PPA? Yes, you are. But it usually falls on your CDS (community development service) day.
Try your possible best to make sure your PPA respects this day for you.
Don’t agree to work for a few hours on your CD’s day.
Just in case your boss pushes you, kindly but firmly state that CD days are meant to be work-free. No cause for alarm!
4. You are entitled to a local allowance
If you’re serving at a private PPA, they’re expected to pay you a monthly allowance. Ideally, this should be at least ₦5,000, but it can be more because of this present economy.
Some PPAs do pay between ₦10k and ₦25k or even as high as ₦50k. Make it clear to your employer from the start that you expect to be paid on time. You don’t have to be rude about it; just be polite and assertive.
The newly approved federal government allowance of ₦77,000 won’t cover all your needs, so this conversation is important.

5. Workload
Your PPA is not supposed to overwhelm you. Ideally, you shouldn’t be assigned more than two subjects if you’re teaching at a school.
That said, if you have the strength, passion, and interest (and can handle more), you can volunteer to take on more.
A friend of mine once taught six subjects because she genuinely loved it, but you don’t have to do it if you don’t have the strength for it.
6. Gather information
Before accepting any PPA, don’t be too worried; please ask questions.
Make friends, and talk to the corp members and staff already working there. This will give you an idea of how the management treats people. Are they relatable, friendly, and compassionate, and do they usually keep their promises?
It’s a great way to avoid surprises later or stories that touch the heart.

7. Rules & regulations
Every PPA has its rules, and some are stricter than others, especially mission schools or certain organizations.
Be sure you understand these rules upfront so you can decide if you’re comfortable accepting the placement.
