The Federal Government has formally approved compulsory pre-employment drug testing for all individuals seeking appointment into Nigeria’s Public Service, covering both civil positions and security-related agencies such as the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Board (CDCFIB) and the Nigeria Customs Service.
This development was disclosed in an official statement released on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the policy is part of broader efforts to address the increasing prevalence of illicit drug use and its adverse effects on national security, public health, and economic productivity.

Under the new directive, Permanent Secretaries as well as heads of extra-ministerial departments and parastatals have been instructed to integrate drug testing as a compulsory condition during recruitment exercises for new personnel.
The statement explained that the decision reflects the Federal Government’s growing concern over drug and substance abuse, particularly among young Nigerians, and its implications for workplace efficiency, social stability, and long-term national development.
To ensure proper implementation, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been directed to work in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The tests are to be conducted in line with approved standards and established procedures.
The directive, conveyed through a service-wide circular issued by the OSGF, underscores the government’s resolve to safeguard the integrity of the public workforce while promoting a healthier and more secure society.
