The Federal Government has officially announced public holidays on Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025, to observe Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In addition, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been approved as a public holiday to mark the New Year celebration.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajayi. She stated that the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
While addressing Nigerians, the Minister extended goodwill messages to Christians across the country and globally, as well as to all citizens.
He noted that the yuletide period provides an opportunity to reflect on values such as love, peace, humility, and sacrifice, which are central to the Christmas message and remain vital for national unity and coexistence.
Dr Tunji-Ojo emphasized that these principles are essential in fostering tolerance, harmony, and mutual respect among Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic backgrounds. He encouraged citizens to use the festive season to pray for peace, security, and national progress, while supporting ongoing government efforts aimed at development and social cohesion.

According to the Minister, the Christmas and New Year holidays also serve as a time to strengthen national solidarity, promote compassion, and recommit to collective responsibility in nation-building.
He further called on Nigerians to celebrate responsibly by remaining law-abiding, security-conscious, and considerate of others. The Minister urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday period.
The Federal Government concluded by wishing Nigerians a joyful Christmas celebration and a prosperous New Year.
