The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), has launched a nationwide initiative to provide free CAC registration for 250,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria.
This intervention removes the usual CAC registration fee, often a major obstacle for informal businesses and encourages entrepreneurs to formalise their ventures, gain legal recognition, and unlock access to funding, government support, and growth opportunities.
Why This Federal Government Free CAC Registration Initiative Is Important
Many Nigerian small businesses operate informally due to the cost and perceived complexity of registration.
Without CAC documentation, these businesses often struggle to access grants, loans, training programmes, and market opportunities.
By eliminating the business name registration fee (normally about ₦22,000), SMEDAN and CAC are helping MSMEs transition into the formal economy, improve credibility, and qualify for business support services and aftercare programmes.

Key Benefits for MSMEs
1. Free CAC Registration
Eligible businesses can register their business names with CAC at zero cost, fully covered under the SMEDAN–CAC partnership.
2. Listing in SMEDAN’s Official MSME Database
Registered businesses are enrolled into SMEDAN’s national MSME database, which is often required for access to grants, loans, training, and government-backed opportunities.
3. Access to Business Support & Aftercare
Formalised enterprises may benefit from capacity-building programmes, technical assistance, mentorship, and market linkage opportunities from both public and private sector partners.

New Eligibility Criteria for FG SMEDAN Free CAC Registration
This free registration programme is open to:
1. Nano, micro, and small businesses in Nigeria that are not yet registered with CAC
2. MSMEs already captured in the SMEDAN database but without a CAC business name
3. Informal business owners across all sectors seeking legal recognition
Note: Registration is strictly first-come, first-served until the 250,000 available slots are exhausted.

Step 1: Visit the SMEDAN Portal
Go to https://portal.smedan.gov.ng/signup
Step 2: Create an Account
Sign up using your first name, last name, email address, and a password.
Step 3: Complete Your Business Profile
Fill in accurate business details such as business name, address, sector, and contact information.
Step 4: Submit Your Registration
Review your details carefully and submit your SMEDAN registration.
Step 5: Follow CAC Registration Instructions
Once registered on the SMEDAN portal, you will receive guidance on how to complete your free CAC business name registration under the initiative.
Entrepreneurs who need assistance can visit SMEDAN State Offices or business clinics nationwide for in-person support.
Important Note and Tips for Applicants
All prospective applicants are expected to prepare their basic details in advance (business name, contact information, ID such as NIN or voter’s card) and apply early to secure a slot before the quota is filled
