The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed claims that a recent SMS about the commencement of its “Operation Go Cashless” programme is a scam.
In a press release dated 27 February 2026, FAAN explained that misinformation has been circulating, warning people not to open the SMS link because it allegedly aims to drain bank accounts.
The authority has described this counter-message as false, misleading, and unfounded.
According to FAAN, the official SMS notification informing the public about the implementation date of the Operation Go Cashless initiative is legitimate. The messages were properly disseminated by FAAN in partnership with MTN Nigeria as part of a nationwide public sensitisation campaign. The agency stressed that the SMS is genuine and not a fraudulent attempt to defraud recipients.

FAAN confirmed that the Operation Go Cashless programme will officially begin on March 1, 2026. The initiative is part of FAAN’s structured transition to a fully cashless and contactless payment system across all airport payment points nationwide. This move is aimed at improving efficiency, convenience, transparency, and security for airport users.
The authority has advised members of the public to ignore the false counter-message and rely only on verified information released through FAAN’s official communication channels.
FAAN also reaffirmed its commitment to passenger convenience, transparency, and the overall safety and security of airport operations across Nigeria.
