The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched the 2026 edition of its National Essay Competition, aimed at educating young Nigerians on disaster preparedness and risk management.
This initiative encourages participants to think critically about emergencies, climate change, and the role of innovation in disaster response, while promoting awareness and resilience across communities.

Competition Categories and Topics
Participants are grouped into three categories, each with a specific theme:
- Senior Secondary School Students: Focus on individual responsibility in reducing disaster risks
- Tertiary Institution Students: Explore the link between climate change and disaster management in Nigeria
- NYSC Corps Members (Emergency Management Vanguards): Examine how technology can improve disaster response, including its benefits and challenges
Applicants are expected to write essays that clearly address their assigned topic with relevant examples and practical insights.
Prizes to Be Won
Outstanding entries will be rewarded with cash prizes as follows:
- First Place: ₦500,000
- First Runner-Up: ₦300,000
- Second Runner-Up: ₦200,000
These rewards recognize creativity, originality, and depth of understanding in addressing disaster-related issues.

Eligibility and Submission Guidelines
To participate successfully, applicants must follow these requirements:
1. Submit essays in Microsoft Word format
2. Use Times New Roman font, size 12
3. Adhere to the word limit:
- Secondary school category: Maximum of 500 words
- Other categories: Maximum of 1,000 words
4. Submit only one entry per participant
5. Clearly include:
- Full name
- Category
- School name or NYSC posting details

Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be assessed based on the following:
- Content quality, relevance, and depth (40%)
